With Thanksgiving four weeks out, Legacy Furniture in Hagerstown, MD shares simple advice on sizing a dining table and planning around made-to-order timing.

With Thanksgiving four weeks away, Legacy Furniture, an Amish furniture store in Hagerstown, Maryland, is sharing simple advice for families getting ready to host. The message is plain: count the people who actually come, measure the room, and know how long a made-to-order table takes before picking one.
A big dinner shows off a table’s weak spots. Chairs bump the wall. A leg wobbles. Somebody ends up at a card table in the next room. A tape measure is a better place to start than a catalog. Measure the dining room and leave space to pull the chairs out. Then count seats. Legacy Furniture works with more than 60 Amish builders, so a table can be built to the size the room needs. The wood can be red oak, white oak, cherry, hickory, hard rock maple, or walnut. Leg, pedestal, trestle, and cabinet-base tables are all part of the dining room line.
Timing is the part shoppers tend to miss. Made-to-order furniture usually takes several weeks, and sometimes a few months, because it is built after the order is placed. Families hoping for something new before the holidays can ask about in-stock furniture on the showroom floor. For everyone else, there is no rush. A table planned now can be ready for a gathering down the road.
“Most people walk in counting chairs,” said Vaughn Martin, partner at Legacy Furniture. “I’d rather they count who really shows up for dinner, and then go measure the room. A built-to-order table takes some weeks, and that’s good to know before you shop. If it can’t make this Thanksgiving, that’s okay. It’ll be there for the next one, and it’ll fit.”
The store sits inside the Hagerstown Premium Outlets, just off I-70 at Exit 29B. That is about 70 miles west of both Baltimore and Washington, and plenty of shoppers make a day of the drive. Hours run Monday through Wednesday from 10 to 5 and Thursday through Saturday from 10 to 6. The store is closed on Sundays, plus Thanksgiving and Christmas Day, so plan the trip around those.
Owner-operated since 2004, Legacy Furniture is run by partners Vaughn Martin and Sheldon Eby, who both work the showroom floor. The store carries solid wood furniture in Mission and Shaker styles for the bedroom, dining room, living room, and home office. Pieces are sold in stock and made to order. Solid wood Amish handcrafted pieces come with a Limited Lifetime Warranty and a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
