WE ARE THE CREW is a new oral history of live music told by people who build it, wire it, rig it, and haul it from city to city. Developed and co-authored by Lisa Deyesso, a 38-year member of IATSE out of Local 11 Boston, with editor and co-author Christina Harlin, the book captures the grit, ingenuity, and humor that define life behind the stage. It features first-person stories from 49 backstage professionals whose combined careers span the golden age of rock touring through the present day.
The book began during the COVID shutdown, when veteran crew members suddenly found themselves off the road and uncertain about the future of live touring. What started as connection became preservation: recording the voices of a generation who built the live rock experience before the industry changed again. Those conversations also sparked the creation of The Crewhouse, a nonprofit initiative dedicated to supporting backstage professionals throughout their careers and beyond.

About Lisa Deyesso
Deyesso is an IATSE (International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees) union cardholder out of Local 11 Boston, Massachusetts. For over 38 years, she’s been in the rock business: she has toured, been a crewmember, run the crews, worked as a lighting designer, climbed into the ceiling as a rigger, been a master electrician, sound engineer, truck driver, loader, pusher, runner – she’s even been in wardrobe.
She’s worked through riots. Survived Lollapalooza when the fires started. Lived through a raid at Boston Gardens. Pushed through dehydration and hunger, falling, head injuries, a broken cheekbone, back problems, crushed fingers, and plenty of people telling her this wasn’t a woman’s job.
